WAS' Summer Program
Adaptive Canoeing and Kayaking Welcome to summertime with Wintergreen Adaptive Sports! We teach canoeing and kayaking to people with all types of disabilities. Children and adults with paraplegia, autism, blindness, amputations, stroke, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, and more have enjoyed the adventure and relaxation of paddling on lakes and rivers. We have canoes and kayaks that are one-person (solo) or two-person (tandem). Typically at least one instructor and one assistant works with each student to adapt the boat first and then teach paddle strokes. All students must attend a lake day prior to going downriver. After the lake, WAS offers lessons on gentle rivers in the area. We have picnics on the river, play water frisbee, and watch the great blue herons. We need volunteer instructors, assistants, and shuttle drivers too. There will be a Spring Training for all boating volunteers on May 22 & 23, 2009 at Wintergreen’s Lake Monocan. Come enjoy the melted snow with WAS!
