The Annual Wounded Warriors Winter Sports Weekend

January 21-23, 2011

In 2005, Wintergreen Adaptive Sports hosted the first annual Wounded Warrior’s Weekend. 

At that time, seven soldiers and marines, recently injured in the Iraq war, were our guests for a weekend of adaptive skiing and snowboarding instruction. 

Accompanied by support staff from the Walter Reed AMC as well as spouses and family members, they were provided with lodging and meals as well as specialized instruction, adaptive or regular snow sports equipment, and lift tickets. 

On January 22-24, 2010 we hosted the sixth annual Wounded Warrior Weekend. Participation has expanded now to include not only Walter Reed AMC, but also the Martinsburg and Hampton Veteran's Hospitals, the USMC Wounded Warrior Barracks at Camp Lejuene, the Fort Eustis Wounded Warrior Transition Unit and independent veterans. This year we sponsored twenty-one Warriors and their families. The emphasis remained to provide total support to the Warriors and their families and to give them a joyful weekend away from the stresses of rehabilitation. This formula continued to be a winning combination as we embraced them into the WAS family. The entire Wintergreen Resort and community swung into action, providing everything from snacks and welcome bags to lift tickets and equipment. Many lessons were given to warrior spouses and children and the smiles and shrieks of joy were everywhere. As usual, and not to our surprise, the Warriors took to the snow magnificently. Some who never skied or snowboarded before demonstrated outstanding talent (how about never-ever to expert slope in two days?), and the experienced members showed that they not only could participate, but did so better then ever.

Following a full day of snow sports we enjoyed a wonderful banquet at the resort with not only the Warriors and WAS staff, but also with volunteers from throughout the community. Without the help of our dedicated volunteers and the generosity of numerous individuals and organizations this special weekend could not take place.
